What is a cover letter?
A cover letter is a text for you to introduce yourself to the recruiter in a selection for a job opening.
In the text you show yourself as a professional who meets the requirements of the job and is ready to help in the company. This attracts the recruiter’s attention and increases your chances of being called.
Professional letter of recommendation
A carta de recomendação profissional é um texto onde alguém atesta sua performance profissional.
Generally, this letter presents your qualities and makes a recommendation. In this way, it is also a direct map for recruiters.
Once again this text succeeds in increasing your chances of being called into the company. Once someone, usually your former superior recommended you.
However, you need to understand that usually the recruiter will look for your former boss to confirm the details of the letter.
Thus, lying here may not only be fatal for that position, but also for your career.
What is the difference between a cover letter and a professional letter of recommendation?
The big difference between the cover letter and the letter of recommendation is who makes it. In the recommendation letter a third party writes and in the cover letter you write.
In the cover letter you make a first contact and use some writing techniques to get the recruiter’s attention on you.
The same effect occurs in the letter of recommendation, but in the letter of recommendation the effect is for the recommendation itself.
That is, while in the cover letter it depends on the way you write, the letter of recommendation draws attention because someone else is recommending you.
Why write a cover letter?
As we talked about in the first few topics above, the cover letter increases your chances of being call for an interview.
Naturally, it increases your chances of getting the job. Moreover, it shows that you have really put in the work to send your resume.
Since most other competitors will not do this. By doing this you get closer to the recruiter and only have something to gain by writing a cover letter.
Obviously, the letter will not work magic. Your Resume still needs to meet the vacancy and align, without considering the interview which is an important point.
However, with the cover letter you will be able to go one step further ahead of your competitors to get the job opportunity.
Types of cover letters
Briefly, there are three types of cover letter that you can use in different scenarios. Let’s make a list explaining each of the card types.
- Response to Job Announcement
- Directed to the selection company
- Spontaneous applicant
A carta de resposta ao anúncio de vaga é óbvia, é quando você envia uma carta para uma empresa que anunciou a vaga.
In the selection company targeted letter is when you want to put your database to selection companies, so whenever there is a vacancy they will let you know.
Finally, there is the spontaneous applicant letter, where the company has not even advertised the position and yet you have sent it.
How to start a cover letter?
To start a cover letter it is recommended that you be direct, i.e. know the name of the recruiter.
That way you can use “Dear, name of recruiter” this creates even more confidence about you.If you don’t know just write “Dear” to address the human resources team.
Then you can start your letter by talking about the context in which it was sent, based on the three types we talked about earlier.
“I hereby reply to the advertisement for job position x posted on Linkedin and am available to fill it.
This is a great example for a cover letter in response to a vacancy announcement. Notice that in the example the candidate was available, and this is the most important thing.

Tips for cover letter
In this penultimate topic we will show you essential tips for your cover letter. These tips also apply to your modifications of the models we show.
Keep the letter short and to the point
The first of these is to keep the letter short and to the point on the most essential information about the position, such as requirements, education, experience, etc.
A long letter can become confusing and is not a good sign for those doing the recruitment, even if with a lot of information, focus only on the essential and most important.
Be aware of the company’s objective with the position
Some companies advertise their goal with the position, such as hiring an administrative assistant to develop spreadsheets and make life easier in the company.
This is just one example, but you have to understand that every company has a goal behind the job.
So if this is not informed you need to deduce so that you make your cover letter with this main goal as a guide.
Be aware of the tone you want your cover letter to take
If you are a seasoned professional it is important that you can set a decisive tone and focus in your letter. In other words, be more direct and confident.
However, if it is your first job you need to set a tone that you are ready to learn and become a valuable resource in the company.
In short, your career and experience needs to be aligned with the tone, after all if an experienced professional gives a tone of wanting to learn it is negative, isn’t it?
Since if he has years of experience, he will naturally have more to teach than to learn. However, the opposite is true for an inexperienced professional.
